Red face Redesign the Asuran Race for Guild Wars 2

I don't think I'm alone in despising these little buggers. Everything about the Asurans gets my goat; whether it's the uninspiring, market research-driven "cute" style of the character design (shamelessly ripped off from "Lilo & Stitch"); or the jarring, contemporary sci-fi theme to their culture and personalities (the stereotypical cocky, wisecracking "science nerd").

However you look at them, they're just naff, and fit in to the rest of the Guild Wars world about as elegantly as a christmas turkey fits into a toaster.

I suggest Anet reviews the entire concept of the Asuran race and moves it towards something that doesn't make me feel as if I've stumbled into a bits box of rejected Cartoon Network characters. In summary:

1 - Restyle the visual look of the Asurans to something less cartoony and kid-friendly. Something that at least feels like it belongs in a world of (relatively) anatomically correct humans and animals (and all the beastlike derivatives of) would be a start.

2 - Make their technology more mystical and arcane - more appropriate to a world based around magic and ancient myth, and move away from using modern sci-fi jargon and maths/computing buzzwords.

You're not alone, but not unopposed either. I love the Asura as they are.

I like how the asura are cute and cuddly.
Although they could try to make their technology more magical...

quit bein a pussy, there is nothing better than a bad ass midget mouse spiking SF. If we don't keep them the way they are.. we should just go play R.O.S.E instead of GW2.

I agree with you that they should move away from the scifi-esque theme and back to the magic.

anyways, at least our lil bastards look cute vs. those butt-ugly gnomes.

I don't like the design, but I love the attitudes.

A nice way to explain a change in design is natural evolution as a result of 250 years of living on the surface. VERY FAST natural evolution. The eyes and ears, according to science, would not need to be as large, and they would probably become taller.

And I like the technology. Remember that Guild Wars 2 takes place 250 years in the future. The dwarves already have gunpowder in the current go-around.

The Asura are fine the way they are now, and I'm really not sure why everyone thinks that they are cute. I know for certain that if I were to meet one I would not want to come up to it and give it a hug. Those are mean little buggers that have no qualms about using you as a guinea pig, even if it means your death.

Plus, their superior attitude is a win for me; makes them all that much funkier :P.

I have a few things to say. First, how do you connect Asuras to Stitch? Sure the look similar, but if you look at all the concept art for Asuras and the comments on them, it is clearly stated that they were based loosely off of goblins and the like.

Second, how are they not belonging in the world? In fact, WHY would they belong in the world? They were from underground, therefore they would look different than most things (the cave thing explains their big eyes and white skin mainly).

Thirdly, their technology is more mystical than scientifical. Look at the explanation for what a Golem is, it's a machine, powered by magic. That is how all of their technology is, machines powered by magic. They don't use electricity the way we do, they don't use motion the way we do. They use Magic to power all of their machines.

I see nothing wrong with the Asura (aka brainiac goblins).

Child friendly? Them? They are small creatures that can look cute yes but seriously look at them when they're in a battle stance. Besides they are perfectly formed with every detail well thought through.

And I think it's a good thing that it isn't all about the magic. It is a world and therefore it should have different aspects and the mathematical and scientific part for the asuras are perfect. And there's still a lot of magic with them. The golems, ether crystals, all their technology is based on draining magic from different sources such as the great stones in Rata Sum or that ancient dragon (forgot his name)

Besides they've made this specie like this so if they suddenly change again after only 200 years that would be ridiculous.

You could have an RP explination for thier loss of technology/change in appearence that makes sense.

Have some sort of "nuclear hallucust" or some other mystic crystal malfunction, etc that levels their civilization so they have to start from scratch (and have to rediscover all their technologies by going back to the basics... some forms of magic). If nothing else, it will give their species some sort of overall motivation behind their behavior.

I'd agree they barely fit in Tyria, but that's not really.

You think they're cute? I don't think I am the only one thinking they are not so cartony, judging for the replies.

I'd agree they could lower the techno feeling a bit, but over all they are probably the second "best" presented GW2 race so far (we only have Sylvari left to see).
Replies are in bold in the quote.
That being said, all I do is hope they will deepen all races a bit. And I have more hope they will make the Norn a lot less stuck up than they are now. Which could happen since the norn are only begining to have dealings with humans, so they can "humanize" themselves a bit.

Checking at the voices asuran responses on the wiki... I'm almost tempted to get to r10.

While I certainly hope that the new engine allows for the graphics to more closely resemble the concept art throughout ALL of GW, I do not think they need a complete redesign.

A darker edge to the entire universe would be well accepted, though (!).

umm... i think you answered your own question.

/signed for changing the look of them. the very first thing i thought when i saw them was "is that supposed to be lilo and stitch" i don't have a problem with them not looking human but they definitely look too cartoonish.

keep the attitude though.

I thought they looked more like Gremlins than Stitch. Then again, Stitch is a rip-off of Gremlins... Perhaps I'm from the wrong generation to be stuck on these similarities.
